More practice for beach picture

This wasn't going so well, the body was boring and wonky, but preserved a bit up top to show I've been working at something.

A guy

This is sort of a nothing picture, mostly an attempt at working on simple rounded forms for the body.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford

Criminal, drug abuser, all-around despicable person, thought I'd better get this done before he's left the scene in disgrace.

Sketch

I keep searching for this bulky look. I was just sketching now and did this guy and thought, yeah that's kind of it. But it will probably slip away again when I try to vary it up a little in other figures.

IMDB Starmeter Top 10

To some people's concern, playing Tonto in The Lone Ranger. Up to number three this week.

More doodling and filling it in with colour

These are what I did today, for better or worse. I need a little more focus in what I'm doing, but I'm trying to reach a stage where I feel more productive and efficient in my approach. So I just doodle in the search for that. Probably not the best tactic for that.

IMDB Starmeter Top 10

Armie Hammer, the Lone Ranger, is number four. I was going to make it a Lone Ranger day, with a Johnny Depp, who is at number six. Maybe tomorrow.

Bathing Beauty

Although now that I put it up I see that the costume just looks like an everyday women in tights and a sleeveless t-shirt.

Random Doodles

Wasn't happy with a couple pictures I tried to do the last couple days, so these were just based on nothing pics to try to get things moving again. My stuff is looking flat and clunky to me right now, need to work through that.

Scarface - The Comic Relief

Started struggling a bit, so crashed for a couple days but made it to the library today to do this one. Tony's assistant, he acts as a bit of a secretary but doesn't know how to use a phone. Which probably wasn't that unusual in the 1930s when phones weren't everywhere.

IMDB Starmeter Top 10 - No one changes their name in Hollywood anymore edition

Benedict Cumberbatch, who is in the latest Star Trek, is number 9 today. He was about 4 or 5 yesterday when I was looking for subjects. Peter Dinklage, from Game of Thrones, was in the bottom half yesterday. He's gone today.

Scarface - The boss's girl

And, of course, the object of the upstart Tony's attention, because that's the way it works in movies.

IMDB Starmeter Top 10

This week Emilia Clarke is number 1 and Henry Cavill is at number 3. Neither person have I heard of before. Ms. Clarke appears to be the breakout star from Game of Thrones and Cavill is the new superman.

Scarface - Johnny the Crime Boss, and another mug

I'm experimenting now with trying to become more productive, still need to work on a couple things. I get so far with these and know they need a little more finish, but I'm going around in circles, so I call them done and move on.

The Blue Angel - Hans Adelbert Mazeppa, Strongman

"When I see a beautiful women, I go on the offensive. I'm known for that."

Doesn't look like much of a strongman. More of a dandy, but dandy enough to capture Lola's eye.

The Blue Angel - Kiepert, Director and Magician

When he first sees Rath, the Director first asks Lola, "What fruit are you hanging out with now?", but quickly changes his approach when he learns that Rath is a professor. He is as almost as much a force as Lola in dragging Rath into the world of The Blue Angel and in delivering the final humiliation.

The Blue Angel - Lola Lola

Men swarm around me
like moths around the light
If they get burnt
it's not my fault

This was the role that started Marlene Dietrich toward stardom. I drew the character here, not putting much energy into getting a good caricature of Dietrich. I remember the distinct drawings of her, the Mort Druckers and Hirshfelds, with the strong cheekbones, the hooded eyes and the severe mouth. Maybe because she's younger here and her features softer, or maybe because I'm using as my source a YouTube video of an old black and white movie where often details aren't that clear, I wasn't seeing those features so obviously here, and didn't want to get lost between the iconic Dietrich look and Lola Lola.

Worst part of doing this drawing was that the song was continually playing in my head as I drew her.

The Blue Angel - Doctor Immanuel Rath

Rath is a foolish prig, but he enjoys the high status of his position of Professor at the local college. When he follows his students into The Blue Angel, he is disarmed by the earthiness of the inhabitants. A lonely man easily charmed by Lola, he will soon lose everything.

These sketches are based on characters from the 1930 German movie "The Blue Angel", which is available on YouTube for free. Its a fantastically dark film.

The Blue Angel - Barkeep

This guy is so short and wide he looks like an inflatable. The owner of The Blue Angel, always looking to maximize profit. He comes carrying the bottle of champagne the Captain has ordered in exchange for Lola's time.
